are very common in veterinary medicine. Urinary tract infections,
chronic kidney disease, urinary incontinence and feline lower urinary
tract disease are often the reason our pets are taken to the
veterinarian. In Western medicine, these problems are often divided
into acute and chronic conditions. Traditional Chinese Veterinary
Medicine (TCVM) describes them as either Excess or Deficiency
Conditions. In the following article, I’ll discuss <b>acute kidney
and bladder conditions</b>, <b>chronic kidney conditions</b>, <b>urinary
incontinence,</b> and <b>FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease)</b>.
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Kidney and bladder disorders are
perfect examples of the synergism of Western and Eastern medicine. </b>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The most <b>common acute problem we see
in veterinary medicine is bacterial infection</b> of the kidneys
and/or bladder. Similar to people, we often see dogs with bladder
infections with a bacteria called <i>E. Coli</i>. This infection is
more common in female dogs because their shorter urethra makes it
easier for bacteria to get into the bladder than in male dogs. In
dogs, kidney infections are also sometimes seen due to a bacteria
called <i>Leptospirosis</i>. Acute urinary tract infections are best
treated with conventional Western medicine such as antibiotics, pain
relief medication and increasing fluid intake. If the infection
recurs, or seems resistant to therapy, other tests may need to be
done. These can include urine cultures to identify resistant or
multiple infections, X-ray and/or ultrasound exams to identify
bladder stones or tumors or assessment of the prostate in intact male
dogs for prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate). If any
underlying problems are found, the appropriate medical or surgical
procedures will need to be performed before the urinary tract
infection will resolve.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The most <b>common non-infectious acute
problem is accidental poisoning to due ingestion of human medications
or automobile antifreeze products</b>. Both of these will cause
severe acute kidney failure. Treatment involves hospitalization for
three to five days on high rates of intravenous fluid administration
and medications to protect the kidneys while the toxin is being
eliminated from the body. In rare circumstances, referral to the
veterinary school for dialysis is necessary.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Chronic kidney disease</b>, formally
known as chronic kidney failure, occurs when damage to the kidney
results in an insufficient amount of healthy tissue remaining to
remove waste products of normal metabolism from the blood. As these
waste products build up in the body, animals and people feel
nauseous, lose their appetite, become lethargic and get dehydrated.
The loss of kidney tissue can result from chronic infection,
congenital birth defects, physical damage, toxins as described above
and aging changes, especially in older cats. Conventional treatment
includes long-term fluid administration (including giving fluids
under the skin at home), anti-nausea drugs, medications to control
phosphorus levels and high blood pressure and special “kidney
preserving” diets. These treatments often need to be given for the
remainder of the pet’s life.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
In Traditional Chinese Veterinary
Medicine (TCVM), chronic kidney disease can be due to either <b>Kidney
Yin or Kidney Yang Deficiency</b>. Yang is the warming “energy”
of the body, so pets with Yang-Deficient kidney failure are often
cold, have low energy, and since the Kidney System in TCVM controls
the hind end of the body, these pets are often weak in their back
legs. TCVM treatment includes acupuncture points to stimulate Yang,
nourish the Kidneys, strengthen the back end, warm the body and
promote appetite. Warming, Yang-nourishing herbs are used, as is a
warming, Yang-nourishing diet.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Yin is the cooling “substance” of
the body, so pets with Yin-Deficient kidney disease “run too hot”.
Seen more frequently in dogs than in cats, these are the pets that
pant a lot, tend to be up frequently at night needing to urinate, and
often seem agitated and uncomfortable. Treatment includes the same
Western methods as described above, but this time with the addition
of acupuncture and herbs to help cool the body, stimulate Yin,
nourish the Kidneys, and reduce anxiety. A cooling, Yin-nourishing
diet is also used.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Urinary incontinence</b>, most often
seen in older female dogs, results from a weakening of the neck of
the bladder, allowing the outflow “valve” of the bladder to
remain slightly open, especially when at rest. This allows urine to
leak out, and these dogs often wake up with a puddle of urine in
their beds. This is often treated with a drug called Proin quite
successfully. For those dogs which suffer side-effects, or in which
Proin is no longer effective, or for male dogs, acupuncture and herbs
can be very effective at resolving the incontinence. In TCVM, urinary
incontinence is due to <b>Kidney and Bladder Qi Deficiency</b>. Like
Yang, Qi is energy, the force behind bodily processes. When Kidney or
Bladder Qi is deficient, the body lacks the energy to hold the urine
in the bladder. Acupuncture points for Qi stimulation, nourishing the
Kidneys and strengthening the bladder are used. There are also
Traditional Chinese herbs and foods that help strengthen Kidney and
Bladder Qi.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease
(FLUTD) </b>is a chronic inflammation of the bladder in cats
resulting in irritation, pain, urgency to urinate, crystal formation
in the urine, and in males, urethral obstruction. It is similar to
Interstitial Cystits (IC) in people. There is no one specific cause,
and genetics, diet, infection, stress level and lifestyle all seem to
play a role. Western treatments include increasing fluid intake,
special diets, antibiotics only if there is infection present and
medications for bladder pain. Of the five <b>Primary Chinese
Pathogens</b>, an Excess of two, Dampness and Heat, are present in
the bladder with chronic inflammation. There are very specific
acupuncture points for <i>draining Dampness</i> and <i>releasing
Heat</i>, as well as points for strengthening the bladder and
relieving pain. Traditional Chinese herbs are also used. A cooling
diet is fed to help further release Heat, and Damp foods are avoided.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Many of these conditions are never
going to be completely cured as a simple acute urinary tract
infection may be. For these chronic conditions, incorporating both
conventional and Chinese Medicine into the treatment plan can provide
relief of symptoms, increased comfort and an improved quality of life
for many years.</div>

<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Part of the joy of
owning a pet is growing and maturing together. As our pets become
senescent it is important to understand that they will require an
increased level of care, both medically and at home. Cats and dogs
age at different rates and have different geriatric needs.
Additionally, most large breed dogs age faster than small breed dogs.
</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div align="CENTER" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b> </b></div>
<div align="CENTER" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Cats</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Since
cats think they are superior to dogs we will start with them.
According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP),
“seniors” range from 11 to 14 years old and your cat is
considered “geriatric” after 15. Potential health concerns in an
aging cat include: </span><i><span style="font-weight: normal;">arthritis,
c</span></i><i>ancer, cognitive (brain) disorders, constipation,
deafness, dental disease, diabetes, heart disease, hyperthyroidism,
inflammatory bowel disease, kidney disease, and/or vision problems.</i>
(Phew!)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="font-style: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The challenge lies
in identifying signs of these diseases:</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Did
you know that an inability of your cat to jump may indicate
diabetes? </span><b>Most cats are very stoic and tend to hide pain or
discomfort</b> from even the most observant owners, so please share
even small changes in your older cat with your Whole Pet vet. Signs
of illness may include: increase or change in vocalization; inability
to jump, run or play; decreased or increased appetite; weight gain or
loss; changes in temperature preference (eg. 'My cat used to like
sitting near the heater but now chooses to sit in the cool window
sill or tiled bathroom floor'); changes in litter box habits; odor
from mouth; or excessive licking over one body part.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">For
each calendar year, your cat ages about 6-7 years worth! For this
reason, </span><b>a</b><span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span><b>physical
exam by a veterinarian every 6 months for cats over 10 years old
along with annual blood test screening contributes to early detection
of illness and early treatment</b>. Just think, that is an exam for
your cat only every 3.5 years when compared to humans. Blood tests
should be done on your young healthy cat annually after 3 years old
to establish “normals” which allows the veterinarian to identify
trends. In between exams use your observation skills to monitor for
changes in weight, behavior, activity, or personality.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
You can help your aging cat by making<b>
</b><span style="font-weight: normal;">some changes at home. </span>For
pets with arthritis put food and water <b>bowls in easy to access
places </b>or build a ramp or steps to the bowl. Add an extra water
bowl or fountain because most aging pets, and people, need plenty of
water. Add a component of moist food to your cat's diet at an early
age to fend off dehydration and kidney disease. Supplements like
glucosamine and<b> fish oil </b>should be started early to minimize
arthritis pain and enhance organ health. Incorporating another <b>litter
box in a convenient area</b> may be necessary. Since older cats are
not as active as when young you may need to<b> trim their nails more
often</b> to prevent overgrowth that can get caught in carpets and
tear. Check them monthly. Cats may need help grooming when they are
very aged so gently brush if they will allow. Be mindful: a 12 year
old cat that is not grooming may be a sign of pain.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div align="CENTER" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="CENTER" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Dogs</b></div>
<div align="CENTER" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
In general, a dog
is considered senior between 7-10 years of age, although this varies
between size dogs. Small breed dogs (become senior later) tend to
live longer than the giant-breed dogs(senior earlier). The list of
potential health problems for a dog is similar to that of a cat but
with some variations. <i>Arthritis, cancer, prostate disease,
cognitive disorders, intestinal problems, deafness, dental disease,
diabetes, heart disease, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, urinary
incontinence, liver disease, and/or vision problems. </i>
</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Many people believe falsely that a
limping dog is NOT in pain</b><span style="font-weight: normal;">.
However, if you see your dog limping, it is most likely because the
leg with the limp hurts. Sometimes limps are subtle and need a
veterinarian to identify. Additional signs of illness may include:
urine accidents; skin lumps; constipation or diarrhea; shortness of
breath, coughing, or other difficulty breathing; weakness; changes
in weight, appetite or water intake; increased vocalization; or
uncharacteristic aggression. </span>
</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Did
you know that a 7 year old labrador is 50 in “dog years” and at
age 13 they are 82! For this reason, </span><b>a</b><span style="font-weight: normal;">
</span><b>physical exam by a veterinarian every 6 months for dogs
over 7 years old along with annual blood test screening </b><span style="font-weight: normal;">contributes
to early detection of illness and early treatment. Compared to human
years that is really only a good check up about every 3 years. Blood
tests should be done on younger dogs to establish “normals” which
allows the veterinarian to identify trends. In between veterinary
visits your dog relies on you to read subtle cues of illness. </span>
</div>
<div style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
You can help your senior canine continue to live a happy and
healthy life. It may require putting rugs on hardwood floors to
provide traction for arthritic dogs. Use orthopedic beds, or
additional blankets or padding for their bed. Provide ramps or stairs
to get to frequently used locations, in and out of house and car.
Senior dogs may need to be let out more frequently to go to
eliminate.
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Addressing your older pet's diet is one
way that you can keep your senior canine healthy. <b>Diets for senior
pets should be lower in fat but not lower in protein.</b> A good
quality diet should contain a high quality protein as one of the
first listed ingredients. Some high-end senior diets will be rich in
antioxidants which will slow brain aging (Hills B/D).
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Supplements are usually beneficial and
should include<b> f</b><span style="font-style: normal;"><b>ish oil
for arthritis and organ health. </b></span><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">A
good quality </span></span><b>glucosamine and chondroitin joint
supplement</b> reduces arthritis pain in most dogs. Finally if your
pet is showing signs of brain aging there are several supplements
available that have great promise. Recent research has also shown
that behavioral enrichment and continued physical exercise in older
dogs helps to slow dementia.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
If your pet is losing their vision, remove obstacles and clutter
and cover any sharp edges. Also, keep the layout of your house the
same so your pet can navigate with confidence. Older animals may not
maintain their body temperature as efficiently, so they will rely
partially on you to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the
summer.
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<b>So a little extra care and vigilance will make your pets'
retirement years more comfortable: a gift back to them for a lifetime
of their unconditional love!</b><br />

Meet Dylan, a happy golden retriever.
He may be 16 years old, about 87 in human years, but he is young at
heart! Every time we see Dylan he is wagging his tail and has a
spring in his step. As with any aging human, dogs need an increased
level of care and sometimes an increased medicine cabinet. Through
careful use of medications and supplements his caretakers have eased
Dylan's cognitive dysfunction and arthritis pain. They have always
considered Dylan's comfort and desire to enjoy life in important
decisions like surgery to repair a broken leg when he was 14 and to
remove a large skin tumor when he was 15! Due to their compassionate
and thoughtful care, Dylan continues to enjoy life and bring joy to
us at Whole Pet each time we see him.</div>

Parasites like worms that can be
contracted from fleas, mosquitos, or even soil can wreak havoc on our
pets' health and potentially lead to death, but can be prevented by
simple procedures like feeding monthly chewable, tasty meds; <i>even
less than an ounce worth!</i><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Fleas, heartworms, intestinal
parasites.</b> What are they and why do we need to prevent our
pets from contracting them?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Peak <b>flea season</b> in
Oregon starts in spring and lasts through the summer into early fall,
but fleas can survive year-round in western Oregon's moderate climate
and our heated homes. Since fleas carry tapeworms, year-round
prevention of fleas prevents tapeworm infection as well. It is also
important to prevent flea accumulation on your pet because the bite
of a flea can cause a skin allergic reaction and secondary infection.
While infections can be severe and cause hairloss, even a mild flea
reaction causes the cat or dog discomfort. If you are not taking
measures to <b>prevent fleas</b>, over time a <b>flea
infestation</b> (=lots of fleas, larvae, AND eggs) can develop
even in a tidy home and infestations are harder to treat. The graph
below shows the flea activity for Salem, Oregon by month.
Monthly, year-round preventative for all pets in the home eliminates
flea problems. </div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Intestinal Parasites</b>
we may diagnose in a dog or cat include: roundworms (common in
puppies, kittens and pregnant or nursing dogs), hookworms, whipworms
(harder to diagnose, lower incidence in Oregon), and tapeworms (from
fleas). These worms are commonly diagnosed by microscopic examination
of the feces. Roundworms are named for their shape. Hookworms are
named because they hook onto the wall of the intestines and feed off
of the blood of their host. Tapeworms come from fleas, and whipworms
are found in soil but are uncommon in cats. See the prevalence of
roundworms, hookworms and whipworms; Simply follow this link,
<a href="http://www.petsandparasites.org/parasite-prevalence-maps" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;"><u>http://www.petsandparasites.org/parasite-prevalence-maps/</u></span></a>
and click on "Intestinal Parasites".
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Annual examination of stool sample for
parasites is recommended to make sure your pet is free of them. This
is especially important for families with young children, as
roundworms and hookworms can be contracted by humans, more commonly
young children.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Heartworms</b>
(Dirofilaria immitis) are roundworms that require a mosquito to
mature and spread from animal to animal. While the dog is the
preferred host, cats may become infected as well. This video provided
by the American Heartworm Society explains the heartworm's life
cycle,
<a href="http://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/canine.htmlundefined" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;"><u>http://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/canine.html</u></span></a>.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
While the incidence of heartworm is
more prevalent in California, the south, and southeastern, prevention
is still recommended for several reasons: 1)Consequences from
heartworms are dire, once contracted, are very difficult to treat and
may cause death; 2)It is hard to predict the ability of the heartworm
parasite's or the mosquito vector's ability to adapt and more easily
spread the infection outside of the higher prevalence areas; 3)You
may unexpectedly travel to an area of increased heartworm infection
risk; and 4)Presence of a heartworm positive dog from the
southeastern US may go undetected and be a source of heartworm
infection in Oregon in the warm months.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Testing your dog before beginning
heartworm prevention is recommended and then once a year to ensure
that the product is effective. Most heartworm preventions also
prevent intestinal parasites as well.</div>

<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">In
order to understand anxiety we first have to understand what fear is
and the role it may play in anxiety. </span><b>Fear</b><span style="font-weight: normal;">
</span>is an instinctual feeling of apprehension resulting from a
situation, person, or object that appears to present an external
threat, whether real or perceived. The result is an autonomic
nervous system response. This is your pet's normal “fight or
flight” response.</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Whereas, <b>Anxiety </b><span style="font-weight: normal;">is
the anticipation of future dangers that result in body reactions
(also known as physiologic reactions) associated with fear. You can
see these reactions in a frightened or anxious animal, they include:
elimination (urination and/or passage of bowel movements),
destruction (eating your shoes for instance), over-grooming in cats,
and excessive barking or crying. These are only the visible signs,
many of our pets, especially cats will hide their anxiety from us. </span>
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">The
most common form of anxiety in our pets is separation anxiety.
</span><b>Separation anxiety </b><span style="font-weight: normal;">can
result in any of the physiological reactions listed above. Also, if
your pet has separation anxiety they are more likely to have noise
phobias, such as a fear of thunderstorm or the dreaded vacuum
cleaner. Separation anxiety can be treated with acupuncture, herbs,
medications and/or calming pheromones. In addition adjusting their
environment and behavioral modification are useful. </span>
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
In
<b>Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine</b> (TCVM), anxiety and
phobias are considered disturbances of the <b>Shen </b>or<b>
emotions</b>. The intellect is housed in the brain, but the emotions
(the Shen) are controlled by the Heart. Thus the heart is not just
the organ that pumps blood throughout the body, but the whole Chinese
Heart System, which incorporates the heart, blood vessels and the
entire nutritive system for maintaining the health of the body and is
also responsible for helping to maintain a healthy emotional balance.
If the Heart System is deficient, or if problems with other bodily
systems negatively affect the Heart, then a Shen disturbance can
result. The most <b>common Shen disturbances</b> we face in
veterinary medicine in dogs are <b>separation anxiety</b>, <b>noise
phobias</b> and <b>aggression</b>. In cats, we most commonly see
<b>litterbox issues</b>. <br /><br />Because the Shen is housed in the
Heart, we can treat <b>acupuncture</b> points along the Heart
meridian to directly influence the functioning of the Heart System to
improve Shen disturbances. When the Shen disturbance is due to Heart
deficiency, we can treat points to nourish and strengthen the Heart,
which bolsters the Shen. In addition to acupuncture, we also use
TCVM herbal preparations for long-term Heart and Shen support. These
herbs can be used in conjunction with conventional Western drugs if
needed.

<ol>
<li><div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
As
the owner it is best if you do not get excessively emotional or
coddling to a pet that is anxious, it may make them feel insecure
with you as their protector. Instead <b>act calm </b>and confident as
though nothing at all is awry.
</div>
</li>
<li><div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Keep
your pet in a dark room that is furthest away and most protected
from firework noise. Or, <b>allow them to go into a closet or under a
table</b> where they feel safe.
</div>
</li>
<li><div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Play
music</b> moderately loud. Play something that the pet has heard played
in the house before, a favorite CD.</div>
</li>
<li><div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Apply
a <b>pheremone</b> collar (Adaptil) or install room pheremone diffusers
several days before and after July 4th.
</div>
</li>
<li><div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Place
a “ThunderShirt” to help calm your pet (available for both cats
and dogs). A snug piece of clothing may have the same effect.
</div>
</li>
<li><div align="LEFT" style="font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Put
Bach flower essence “<b>Rescue Remedy</b>” for pets in their water and
around the house.Or try "<b>Harmonese</b>" herbal supplement beginning one week before fireworks. </div>

Anxiety disorders in dogs are the source of discomfort and stress for the dog and for us as pet owners. There is no "cure all" for behavior problems, but at Whole Pet I see a good amount of success combining medication with alternative therapy or with just alternative therapies. Here is a case I would like to share with you about one of my patients.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEax4G0Xeyqbj8-UxOj-pj9grtZl9YQb0d2cL5tPGPFT4hZwrbusndP1OVkcr2qVXDtE33jEyet8CLJqFOa4ZDkSmeDs8XsHn-UJS7qxIDijC44n3Dn6IXzcoTzQqdaotv4JA753-_RgM/s1600/Wally+case+picture.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEax4G0Xeyqbj8-UxOj-pj9grtZl9YQb0d2cL5tPGPFT4hZwrbusndP1OVkcr2qVXDtE33jEyet8CLJqFOa4ZDkSmeDs8XsHn-UJS7qxIDijC44n3Dn6IXzcoTzQqdaotv4JA753-_RgM/s320/Wally+case+picture.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is "Wally" He is 11 1/2 years old. He was treated at Whole Pet for anxiety and is doing GREAT.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Wally is loved by a family that has
been burdened with some stress and illness. So, naturally he is
feeling some of the family's stress. As a result, Wally started to
present with abnormal behavior. He would have vacant staring around
the house, get lost and run into things. He also became very
lethargic. He had some energy in the morning but then would crash and
sleep after noon. He would get very nervous if owner was away from
him. Regularly he suffered from constipation, even though he drank
excessively.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
At presentation, treatment included
Clomipramine medication for anxiety and Lactulose medication for
constipation. The goal of the owner was to wean him off the
Clomipramine drug, and the Lactulose for constipation. In addition
she wanted him to have energy and be happy again.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
A Traditional Chinese Veterinary
Medicine (TCVM) approach was desired for Wally since the medications
did not work that well..and they wanted him to have his life back.
Based on TCVM Wally was diagnosed with Liver Qi Stagnation (this
develops from emotional or physical stress) + Qi deficiency
(represented by lack of energy) + yin deficiency (stress leads to
heat and the yin is all used up cooling the heat).
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I prescribed acupuncture every 2-3
weeks for 4-6 treatments as well as Chinese herbs. After one
acupuncture treatment Wally had more energy and was playing with the
other dog in the house. After 2 treatments he was less anxious and
not staring into space. Wally received 6 acupuncture treatments from
early February to early May, at which time the owner was completely
satisfied that Wally had more energy and was so much happier.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Two Chinese herbal formulas were used.
First, Wei Qi Booster to help booster Qi or energy. This formula is
great for older dogs as it boosts the immune system also and helps
fight diseases like cancer and dementia. A second formula called Er
Yin Jian was added to nourish the “yin” or cooling and grounding
aspect of the body. This formula is good for behavior disorders
caused by yin deficiency. I also believed this formula would help
resolve his constipation. After we had Wally on the formulas several
weeks we began to wean him off the Clomipramine and then off the
Lactulose. He is now off both, with no constipation and he is very
happy. Herbals may be continued for 3-6 months depending on how Wally
feels.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Wally illustrates how TCVM can be used
for anxiety disorders. TCVM may be used as a first line treatment or
if medication does not work as expected, or side effects of
medication prevent using them.</div>

<b><span style="font-size: 15.0pt;"></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Cinder, a female flat-coated retriever, became a patient at our clinic in January 2011 after
she was adopted from the humane society. She was about 8 ½ years old and had
been with 2 previous owners before now. Needless to say there was some change
and resulting stress in her life. She had some itchy skin and watery eyes that
winter. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As we moved into late spring 2011 Cinder's itchiness
continued and she was treated with oral antihistamines and acupuncture.
Acupuncture would give her immediate relief but that would wane after about 5
days. She was on regular flea preventative and had no sign of fleas.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At this time Cinder was diagnosed as likely <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">allergy to pollens or “atopy”</b>. The
pollens may be from trees, grasses or shrubs. They gain entry into the body
through inhalation, but also if the pet licks the pollen from the feet. Some
plants can cause skin inflammation from direct contact; this is often seen on
the underbelly.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As the weather got warmer her itching intensified and she
was treated with oral steroids, which were only moderately helpful.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Because steroid use can be associated with
side effects, we switched to Chinese herbal formulas for allergies and used
them along with antihistamines and added a fish oil source of omega-3-fatty
acids. Fish oil has been shown to reduce inflammation from skin allergies as
well as benefit overall health in both humans and animals. Cinder also
continued to respond to acupuncture treatments with several days of immediate
itchiness relief. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In addition, <i>topical</i> medications that contain
steroids were used intermittently; these are not absorbed into the blood stream
to any significant degree and can give some extra help controlling itchiness. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Treatment for mild itching continued on into the fall and
through the spring. At this point <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">food
allergy </b>had to be considered as pollen allergies are normally seasonal. A
specially formulated hypoallergenic diet was begun in November 2011. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After she had been on the special diet for about 4 month
Cinder's need for additional medication was greatly reduced. We have been able
to manage the itchy skin with herbals, antihistamines, topical medicated spray,
bathing, and fish oil.</div>

Cinder's case illustrates beautifully the need to “slay the
dragon with a thousand tiny cuts”. The fish oil and the medications work
together, called synergistic, to provide an enhanced effect against allergies. This
combined with acupuncture and herbs allowed the most comfort for Cinder.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Cinder is like many dogs in that often a pet
has more than one type of allergy. In her case she is probably allergic to
everything (fleas, pollen and food) but we are able to easily eliminate fleas
with modern preventatives and lessen the effect food may have with the special
diet. Cinder's owner is also instructed to mechanically remove pollens with
wipe downs once she has been outside. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As of this writing Cinder's allergies are almost completely
under control, or resolved. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
Yes, allergy season is upon us, and it doesn't just affect
us but our four legged friends as well. There are three main categories of
allergies in pets, <b>flea allergies</b>, <b><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>pollen
allergies</b> and <b>food allergies</b>. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
A <b>flea allergy</b> is the most common allergy amongst
cats and dogs. It is actually the flea's saliva that a flea allergic dog or cat
is allergic to. As a result, in sensitive dogs a single flea bite can cause an
allergic reaction.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Symptoms of a flea
allergy include hairloss on the backs of thighs, tailbase
and rump; chewing or scratching on the back half of
body; and flea
dirt (the flea's waste product). The best way to prevent an allergic reaction
is monthly, year round flea prevention.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
Pollen allergies are called Atopic
allergies, or <b>atopy</b> for short, and describes an
allergic reaction caused by inhaled allergens such as dust, mold, pollen, or
even dust mites. This is the second most common allergy in pets and can be
seasonal or non-seasonal.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Atopy can
present in many different ways, the most common are: itching, licking paws,
skin irritation or redness, recurrent ear infections that are difficult to cure
and skin chewing.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Although you cannot
cure allergies, there are many treatments available such as: antihistamines;
fish oil supplementation; topical shampoos, oils and cream rinses; topical
antihistamines and anti-inflammatories; acupuncture; oral herbal therapy and
diet therapy. In addition allergy testing and immuno-therapy can be helpful. In
severe cases immune suppressing drugs must be used. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
<b>Food allergies </b>are not as common, but do occur. Food
allergies are caused by an allergic reaction to a protein and or carbohydrate
in the food your animal eats. The most common food allergens (the particle that
cause the reaction is called an “allergen”) in dogs are beef, dairy and wheat.
Whereas the most common food allergies in cats are beef, dairy and fish. Only a
food trial with a single protein and carbohydrate source lasting 6-8 weeks can
rule out a food allergy. Keep in mind,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>food allergies are <i>not </i>seasonal. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black;">
So, what is the take home message? There are three main
types of allergies: flea allergies, atopy and food allergies. Flea allergies
and atopy are the most common with food allergies being the least common.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Animals can have more than one or even all
three types of allergies.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If you suspect
that your pet has allergies you can bring them in for a consultation.</div>

Max is Whole Pet Veterinary Care's "Featured Pet" for May and June. Just a few months ago Max had a severe reaction and abscess on his front foot. It became necrotic and he was unable to walk. After surgical debriding of wound,<br />

we applied low level laser to the wound bed.The laser dramatically shortened healing time, is anti-bacterial and relieves pain. In addition the wound was bandaged with a dressing of local honey. <div class="MsoNormal">
I know this may seem silly, but let’s talk about cats and
scratching. I’ve been thinking of
this lately….because I recently opened my home to a sweet little kitty who was
no longer wanted by her previous owner, after many years. She is de-clawed on
her 2 front feet. Living with 2 indoor-outdoor cats it is hard to keep her from
escaping outside. She loves it out there and my worries about her ability to
protect herself eased when I witnessed her bully my confident male cat into
submission.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So on to cat scratching. This sweet old cat is enjoying her
life in my home with abundant healthy food, laps to sit on and love. Her
happiness overtakes her to the point where she finds herself pawing at the
scratching post out of sheer pleasure.
A sad scene to watch, however, as her little nubs rub on the post and I
swear a look of confusion on her face.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What would make a de-clawed cat scratch? Cats do scratch to
exercise their muscles, and groom their nails but also to scent their territory
and to visually mark it. Neat huh? And you thought cats scratched your couches
just to be mean and annoying. Each
cat has their own personal preferences for perfect scratching spots, some like
vertical surfaces others like horizontal. Also, according to veterinary
behaviorist Jacqueline Neilson, the spot needs to be sturdy, have traction, be
tall or long enough for a full length stretch and placed in a prominent location. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To succeed in providing this wonderful exercise and
enjoyable activity for your cat, test and observe your cat to see if they like
horizontal or vertical surfaces. If they scratch your carpet-horizontal. The
upright of your couch? Vertical. One of my favorite cat scratchers is a
corrugated cardboard box on the floor, corrugations exposed. For vertical scratching posts you must
get one they cannot knock over and it must be high enough for them to stand on
their hind legs and reach up and tear on it. Any home with a new kitten must
have a tall cat tree. Although it may be expensive, it saves couches and
carpets and lives. Many cats love scratching on wood so why not bring a log in
for the cat. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oh, one other thing….once the item is all shredded and worn
do not change it for a new one. They worked hard to get it that way and they
like it that way. Their scent is
on it. Life is perfect, if not pretty.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Some tricks that have been employed to prevent scratching on
unwanted items: tin foil applied to the surface or double stick tape. No cat
likes to have a dainty paw stuck to tape. </div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Hi all. My husband camped near
Jefferson Lake on the SE side of Mt. Jefferson last week and
encountered a TON of ticks. To be honest...I have not seen a tick
since I moved to Oregon 3 and a half years ago, but, I guess they are
here. Please, please if you are taking your dog to the mountains now
or this summer, use tick prevention. Start with Frontline plus, that
should be enough unless you are visiting a heavily tick infested
area.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Remember ticks can transmit Lyme
disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever...and other diseases not so
common here.</div>Whole Pethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13096115437775395266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2426844048066761421.post-48728989284618531392012-05-10T22:20:00.000-07:002012-05-10T22:22:51.400-07:00Pet Hospice<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Greetings, I am back if you are
listening. Since I last wrote I have had to say good bye to my second
and final dog child after 13 and a half great years. Being a
veterinarian I am confronted with the emotions and decisions
regarding euthanasia weekly...and sometimes daily. Because of this I
felt prepared to send my lovely German Shepherds on to the spirit
world, let their energy be free of the flesh and go back to the
universe, perhaps to be a companion again someday. I was wrong.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Nearly one month before we actually had
to put Guinness “to sleep” I had placed an IV catheter and was
about to end her life because she had a bout of seizures and looked
so terrible and confused. But something told me it was not
time...maybe she would be a little better if I just waited. Sure
enough she rallied and came out of her mental fog and began to eat
and take her walks again.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
So many adjustments had been made to
our lives, and our house, to accommodate the lovely aging ladies, but
it never bothered me. I felt I was caring for them as we care for
elderly humans. Non-slip mats in front of the dog bowls, ramps to go
in and out of house and cars and a an occasional piece of dried poop
found under a dog bed...well that got to be more frequent.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Living through caring for aged animals,
I realized so many parallels to human hospice...with one difference:
we can decide when to end it. What an important and difficult place
to be in. During my struggle I asked...”What right do I have to
decide it is your time to go???” “Do you want to go Guinness?”
“Should I have let you go sooner?”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
So life is. Pain and sadness,
loss...but only all these things because of the joy, happiness and
comfort that comes to us too. Winding down the path of aging with
Guinness one day we came to a place where she was ready to leave the
world, my husband knew it, I knew, she knew it. We helped her pass on
and then I lay with her for a long while smelling her fur and just
taking in the sight of her. Over time it seemed the soul left her
physical body. Spending this time with her I realized how important
it is to be home with your pet at this special moment.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
My story is not special or new, I know.
But I wanted to write this to remind myself and others that we go on
a journey with our pets and we are forced to see them through infancy
to geriatrics to the process of dying. I feel it is normal for this
to be challenging and sad and draining. We should expect for the
final months to push us to certain limits and to question our
decisions. It is normal to be sad, really, really sad to see them go
and to bawl at the moment of their death.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Word of advice...practice reality in
your mind on a regular basis. What I mean is; do not tell yourself “I
can't live without my faithful dog” but instead tell yourself “I
will cherish my pet while they are here and make every moment count.
I will stand by their side until the end and let them go with dignity
and peace. And when they are gone I will have enough love to give to
another needy pet and they will have something to give to me.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Thanks for listening and I promise...no
more blogs about aging dogs!!!

I hope you all met our new employees Michelle and Katie and learned something new about our clinic or about veterinary medicine.<br />
<br />
If anyone has a burning question about veterinary medicine, or the clinic or me, please ask it here as it will guide me better in what to write about.<br />
<br />
For the first time at our open house we had our laser out and Michelle was educating everyone on how it works. I wanted to mention that I just read an article in a recent veterinary publication about Laser Therapy. As many of you know we added Laser therapy to the practice in May.<br />
<br />
Current research on lasers confirms that a specific wavelength of coherent light does indeed take away pain and heal tissue. Wavelengths from the mid 700's to the low 900's nanometers (nm) prove to penetrate the deepest and units with power of lower wattage (500 mW or less) can be applied directly to the skin thus delivering a measurable dose of light directly to the underlying tissues. Machines of high power, over 500 mW (some are 10 and 12 Watts) cannot touch the skin directly, must be moved constantly and risk damaging tissue. <br />
<br />
I am so proud to say that after months of research I purchased a low power laser with wavelength production of 808 and 905 nm. This means treatments are safe and effective.<br />
<br />
All dogs and cats with knee, elbow and hip arthritis and pain are great candidates for this treatment. It is possible they can be maintained with laser treatment alone and not have to use drugs for pain. <br />
<br />
I'll sign off for now. <br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">I would like to talk about preventative medicine. Why is it hard for people to enact preventative medicine for themselves and their pets? I think it is because we cannot measure what we prevented.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Modern medicine is held to a standard of “evidence-based” medicine. Essentially this means there are double blind studies to back up any and all treatments we provide. A drug or surgical treatment is given to a large number of dogs or cats with a disease, most of the animals benefit. At the same time the dog or cat not given the treatment must not gain a benefit. This is a good standard to maintain. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Two areas of research in support of preventative medicine come to mind. In 2002 a study reported that 25% food reduction in a group of Labrador Retrievers enjoyed a significantly longer life span than the control group who ate more food. We have also know for many years that having a female dog spayed before her first heat nearly eliminates her risk of getting mammary cancer (known as breast cancer in women). If you wait until after the second heat to have a female dog spayed then her chance of getting mammary cancer is 25%. These results really motivate me to recommend spaying your female dog before her first heat and to advise all pet owners to restrict caloric intake throughout life. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">All too often it is hard to see what we gain when we live a healthy life. We all know people and dogs that eat or have been fed a poor diet and live to a ripe old age. We know people that smoke that live a normal life span. It leaves a person to wonder, what is the best way to maintain my health.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">At this point I choose to fall back on common sense or what seems to be intuitively correct. For me this means eating and drinking in moderation. Eating whole, fresh food. Avoid smoking and ingestion of chemical-laden food. Exercise in moderation. Yes, I believe that too much exercise is unhealthy. Variety in food and types of exercise supports the idea that with variety we will get all our complex needs met. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Emotional stress in moderation is an important component to health. Work and play in balanced amounts. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Exposure to pathogens in the environment makes logical sense in that it teaches our immune system what is a pathogen and how to build up protection against it. Too much protection from disease is bad.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Okay, okay, this is nothing new, I know! But we get distracted by new drugs from these old truths that can not be tested in the modern scientific model. I wonder if our world is coming up on an era where we go back to common sense. Maybe it could be considered more of a realistic view of life as opposed to the view that there is a magic pill to cure what ails us all. Or a single magic berry! There really is no cure all. </div>Whole Pethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13096115437775395266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2426844048066761421.post-60596731979944182542011-06-20T08:41:00.001-07:002011-06-20T08:41:46.411-07:00Laser Therapy for Pets<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:TrackMoves/> <w:TrackFormatting/> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:DoNotPromoteQF/> <w:LidThemeOther>EN-US</w:LidThemeOther> <w:LidThemeAsian>X-NONE</w:LidThemeAsian> <w:LidThemeComplexScript>X-NONE</w:LidThemeComplexScript> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> <w:SplitPgBreakAndParaMark/> <w:DontVertAlignCellWithSp/> <w:DontBreakConstrainedForcedTables/> <w:DontVertAlignInTxbx/> <w:Word11KerningPairs/> <w:CachedColBalance/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> <m:mathPr> <m:mathFont m:val="Cambria Math"/> <m:brkBin m:val="before"/> <m:brkBinSub m:val="--"/> <m:smallFrac m:val="off"/> <m:dispDef/> <m:lMargin m:val="0"/> <m:rMargin m:val="0"/> <m:defJc m:val="centerGroup"/> <m:wrapIndent m:val="1440"/> <m:intLim m:val="subSup"/> <m:naryLim m:val="undOvr"/> </m:mathPr></w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" DefUnhideWhenUsed="true"

<div class="MsoNormal">I am very excited about a new treatment that I am using: LASER therapy.<span> </span>Often there are patients that have pain or inflammatory conditions that no drug will help or they will not allow acupuncture or take herbs or supplements.<span> </span>In the past there was<span> </span>nothing left to offer them.<span> </span>Now I am employing my therapy laser for just such cases. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.<span> </span>It sounds scary but it is basically light created by manipulating photons and using reflection to make<span> </span>uniform beams of “light”.<span> </span>There are different powers of lasers, everything from the low power like laser pointers to surgical cutting lasers. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Many therapy lasers are high power, however my unit is lower powered providing an unparalleled<span> </span>level of safety for patients. What is amazing about this class of lasers is that there are essentially no harmful side effects (as long as you do not point the beam into the eye through the pupil).<span> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">But even more amazing are its benefits. Scientific study has determined that there is a narrow band of wavelengths of light, known as the near infrared, that is absorbed by 2 important tissues in the body and result in healing.<span> </span>These wavelengths of light are not visible by the human eye! They are between 780-950 nm. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Once the light wave is absorbed by the particular cell structures, one is a component of mitochondria and the other is hemoglobin, the energy production of the cell is turned on. In some cases direct gene stimulation occurs and a cascade of healing mediators ensues.<span> </span>The laser does not heal, but rather turns on the tissue cells so they may heal themselves. The most notable and documented effect is control and elimination of pain, like arthritis pain.<span> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Scientific study is ongoing, but the general feeling is that there is no limit to what light can heal.<span> </span>The trick is to know what wavelength to use and how much power to apply and for how long.<span> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">One thing is for sure, it treats pain with no side effects. I have said this many times, and it is true. <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1306126949_1" style="border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer;">Bikram Choudhury</span> put together of sequence of 26 Hatha postures and began to teach them in a 105F room. The claim is that this sequence systematically works all parts of the body including internal organs, veins, ligaments and muscles. The heat is intended to warm the body to make it malleable and to sweat out toxins. After my first class several years ago I was hooked and within a month I felt completely different. My core strength had improved and my stress level had dramatically decreased. Then I moved to Salem, Oregon..no Bikram.<br />
<br />
All types of yoga have the ability to change us. I like yoga that provides exercise but at the same time is a meditation. <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1306126949_2">Meditation</span> because when our mind is calm and open we can accomplish goals we once thought impossible. Part of this meditation is control of the breath which leads to control of the mind. When you are in control of your mind and emotions you have great power to go into the world and be successful.<br />
<br />
Yoga also helps maintain a healthy flow of energy in the body. The result for me has been improved physical and mental health.<br />
<br />
I was so excited to find "Hot Yoga" just next door to the clinic at Simply Blissed! While not the 26 Bikram style poses, the Hatha poses are led in a 100+F room and the experience is similar. The classes are packed, which shows you there is something to this yoga. It leaves one feeling so darn good.<br />
<br />
Anyway, it got me wondering about how animals meditate and if they need meditation. I suppose they are much less affected by the stress of money and reputation than we are. Perhaps the sunbathing of my cat under the most beautifully blooming flowers is his meditation. A colleague of mine believes dogs walk to meditate or meditate on their walk. Exercise does seem to balance most dogs.<br />
<br />
I am sure everyone has heard of Doga? Yoga with your dogs...anyone up for starting this in Salem????Whole Pethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13096115437775395266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2426844048066761421.post-9067647780344976792011-05-01T23:07:00.000-07:002011-05-01T23:07:45.315-07:00Silver Falls, OR and Sheeba and buddies<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4rmblaDNYbFfUpKA6ZP9YA80kQWDLC5B6-Hp1rOw9vDgTyrIYyynVBqpP4aeLwZKijK8CgA0bAg_LFmhlKedMrSHd7qJcHI0XgMPuR7jlhH8GRM54KzP9p2_zh_BIf59NIslhclVXphU/s1600/IMG_1584.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4rmblaDNYbFfUpKA6ZP9YA80kQWDLC5B6-Hp1rOw9vDgTyrIYyynVBqpP4aeLwZKijK8CgA0bAg_LFmhlKedMrSHd7qJcHI0XgMPuR7jlhH8GRM54KzP9p2_zh_BIf59NIslhclVXphU/s320/IMG_1584.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">May 1st marks the end of a half a year of winter! Boy is this ever true this year in Willamette Valley, six months of cold and rainy. At least today I could see my shadow for most of the day and was able to get some color back in my cheeks. However, my bare feet remain a blinding, reflective, glowing, fluorescent bright white. If winter is over then why am I still bringing in the baby tomato plants over night so they don’t freeze?!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Hope this glorious day finds everyone well. With each passing year I cherish life, and all it has to offer, more and more.<span> </span>Is this normal “getting old” syndrome? It becomes easier to step back and see the big picture and what is important in life. I am learning that the stress of what modern America expects of me should not ruin my day, month or entire life.<span> </span>There is a rush to do this repair or paint the house, have kids or become an expert in a new area of medicine…until I mentally step back and back and back. I think of the whole country and then the whole world and my little worries seem so insignificant.<span> </span>On the other hand the simple act of a stranger’s kindness or a shared meal with a friend can mean so much and make someone feel so good. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Recently I have been thinking more “cosmically” as I watch my dear companion Sheeba deteriorate with aging. She gets up everyday and goes through all the motions with her stiff (and I suspect, achy) body. She is so happy at times and attempts to run only to have the hind legs buckle and leave her pulling them along with the front legs. The latest concern is that she no longer can tell when she has to have a bowel movement. It is quite sweet to see her trudge up the ramp after going outside for “potty” only to find that once in, realizes she was not done and runs for the back door to try and get down the ramp with a fecal ball plopping out as she goes.<span> </span>We’ve had a few accidents in the house of course.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">So I wonder when she wants to go; looking in her eyes I ask: “Sheeba please just let me know when you want to go”. She is definitely NOT ready.<span> </span>On the pillow within straight site of me she sits and stares at me, keeping vigil over my every move. Thanks Sheeba, I will be lonely when you are gone.<span> </span></div>Whole Pethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13096115437775395266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2426844048066761421.post-74241121250183536832011-03-14T22:59:00.000-07:002011-03-14T22:59:42.691-07:00Aging Pets<style>

<div class="MsoNormal">It is easy to see our pets as ageless. They are forever our ”babies” even as their eyes become cloudy and they move more stiffly. I find myself disappointed that my 12 year old German Shepherd, Guinness, can no longer retrieve her favorite basketball or jog with me even 1 mile! When did it happen?! They are still so darn cute it is hard to understand that they are seniors. I mean I actually think it is sweet when Sheeba, almost 15, wets her bed! </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Our walks should be called ‘bumbling strolls’. Imagine a one-eyed dog with a lung tumor and a partially paralyzed larynx (makes breathing difficult), hip dysplasia, back arthritis and a gimpy right front leg along with Sheeba who has a head tilt and is dizzy, a back end that does not seem to communicate with the front hind, and if you pet her too firmly she will fall over. Fun times. But we keep walking because I firmly believe when you stop moving you die.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">The girls no longer can be left outside for fear of the “I’ve fallen and can’t get up” scenario. Therefore they need to be let out at least 3 times a day or we find poop surprises. I am always amazed to see they make it to the kitchen and save my rugs, how sweet! </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Meal times are fun too! Each dog gets about 10 pills/capsules of herbs and pain medications and supplements. Sheeba takes coaxing and tricking and 3 different flavors of cat food to get the pills down.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">The 20 linear feet of home-made dog ramp has been a beautiful addition to the house, not! </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Having two large breed dogs, over 12 years old who have health problems and need lots of care taking has made it quite clear to me: I am engaged in caring for the elderly.<span> </span>Many of you may be doing the same. We owe it to our loyal companions. I realize how important this job is, that this caretaking of the elderly is a part of life. At times it makes me sad to know they will be gone, but I continue to be there for them with love and compassion. For our pets and elderly people it is one of the more important things we can do. </div>Whole Pethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13096115437775395266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2426844048066761421.post-91634089672839427662010-12-10T23:49:00.000-08:002010-12-10T23:49:41.007-08:00Grape Harvest 2010<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXg7x1YAXKJkCAt4zO9f0HObBXs2tuQitJl2ugW0MOFdS9-pBr1zOeJkgLDAhQZ_OKKPRXEj5j8V6wxTUaJZ5OgU5h_rjPhDMq-x-cW_fJkWCo3vlY48kiVYCwwY62X2fQc6uL4fxo1S4/s1600/IMG_1519.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXg7x1YAXKJkCAt4zO9f0HObBXs2tuQitJl2ugW0MOFdS9-pBr1zOeJkgLDAhQZ_OKKPRXEj5j8V6wxTUaJZ5OgU5h_rjPhDMq-x-cW_fJkWCo3vlY48kiVYCwwY62X2fQc6uL4fxo1S4/s320/IMG_1519.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />

This became clear on my first witness to a wine grape harvest. Luck (and the gods?) brought a clear, cold sunny day on the first day of grape collecting at a local vineyard. Despite having to get up early on my one day off, I became giddy with excitement as I climbed to the top of the hill and saw the crates of grapes piled high. Workers hand picking, quickly and efficiently. Bucket after bucket of grapes tumbling into the grape bins. Leaves and defective clusters quickly removed, once full away the grapes would go to the winery for processing. <br />
<br />
In rows, the clusters all present at one level, maybe 3.5 feet from the ground. The vines pruned with deliberation the year before to create a somewhat organized presentation of fruit. I tasted several grapes right from the vine and pondered how the high quality wine from this vineyard begins right here with this simple fruit. But of course it is not simple and it did not "begin" with this grape. Much thought and organization went into the growth of this plant.<br />
<br />
Silly as this may sound, I did not even realize that the grapes were hand picked! But this 60 acre or so vineyard, and many others, are dependent on the hands of many agricultural workers. The number of workers you can amass determines how fast you can bring in the harvest.<br />
<br />
I have always enjoyed wine, but now now I see and taste a work of art created by many hands and minds.<br />
<br />
